The Oelematt residential complex is located approximately 250 m from the Steinhausen village centre and St. Matthias church. It is designed as a building ensemble, which is grouped around an attractive inner courtyard. The facility comprises four five-storey apartment buildings with an attic and a connecting basement with a car park. The buildings are built on different, diamond-like areas and developed as an economical structure with a central hallway. A naturally lit staircase in every building gives access to two apartments on each floor – with the exception of the attic. Oelematt is characterised by two elongated and two punctiform cubes. The four buildings are placed at the corners of the plot. This creates a clearly recognisable, true-to-scale development pattern with a spacious, contiguous inner courtyard in the centre of the plot. The resulting open space for pedestrians, play areas and communal recreation areas is a special feature of the concept and forms the centre of the development. The arrangement, orientation and shape of the buildings allow attractive references to the surrounding landscape, as well as interesting views in different directions. The external appearance of the buildings is determined by their shape and the interplay between ‘closed’ and ‘open’ façades. As an ‘open’ façade meets a ‘closed’ one, the buildings appear to revolve around the central courtyard, making the opposing view seem deliberate at the same time.
